It is truly amazing that the adoption of online banking today is at a very low level. Maybe because of a fear for online transactions and fraud. Maybe because the internet has not reached the rates of acceptance in all ages that we would all want.
Either way, there is much to benefit from online banking and here are a few good reasons:
1. Track your expenses
Although paying cash has its benefits (mainly that you tend to spend less), it makes it harder to track your expenses. Unless you are completely obsessed with spending money, you probably don't keep track of everything you pay in cash. That is also true for credit card expenses. Yes, you do get a statement at the end of the month but it is usually too late by that time.
Use online banking and you will be able to know exactly what you have spent in gas, groceries, travel, etc. You name it. You know if you are overspending. If your son or wife has your credit card you can also check their expenses. This as you might imagine can be very helpful sometimes. I do recommend though letting your wife know about it.
2. Prevent credit card fraud
Monitor your credit card expenses with online banking and you will know exactly when an illegal charge was made. Contact your credit card company and let them know. Yes, usually they give you a month to report such events but what if you lose your mail or don't notice on time. Too late to claim all this money back and it might be thousands of dollars.
3. Prevent identity theft
Stop receiving your bills at home and set up everything with online banking. Bills get lost in the mail. Even though all your account information is usually not included, it still makes identity theft easier. Throwing your bills away? Not a good idea. Collecting them, huge clutter. I have always hated this dilemma.
4. Avoid running errands, save some time
Set up bill payments online. Either your monthly rent, or your cell phone bill, your electricity, car payments. Anything you want. You really don't need to use your car, spend time in traffic and money in gas. Use online banking to your advantage.
5. Take advantage of special offers
There are so many special offers today that you can only find out through online banking. I admit some of them are not even worth looking at, but some others you can really benefit from. Next time you log in to your bank's website check them out.
6. Have instant knowledge of your finances
Two months ago I lost my credit card at a popular resort. Imagine how much better I felt there was a way to check my card was not charged until I cancelled it. Set up online banking through your iPhone app and you'll be able to know exactly what is going on with your finances at any time. Use online banking for emergencies.
7. Make safe online purchases
Most banks now are able to give you a credit card number that you can use only for one purchase. Bank of America has ShopSafe. Check your bank's website. If you don't give your real card number it is less likely somebody will steal your card online right?
8. Avoid a bank robbery
Hey, as far as I am concerned, spending less time in the bank means less chances I will be trapped in a bank robbery...
