What are people going to do when banks stop using cheques in 2018?

UK Banks are planning to do away with paper cheques / cheque books by or before 2018.

I understand that many businesses will be able to just use cash or card payments, but cheques are still used a lot by people, esp those who dont use computers much.

as an example my nan wants to know how she will send her grandaughter birthday money.

any ideas?

cheers
p.s. i don't think sending cash in the post is a good idea

In Switzerland they got rid of cheques ages ago. People use internet banking which is brilliant of course but you can also make payments at the post office or the bank. You walk in and give them cash over the counter and receive a receipt saying that the money has gone into the recipients account or you can send a granddaughter a post office chit to be redeemed at the other end like our old postal orders.

Bills always arrive with a detachable slip that you can either take into the post office and pay with cash or you can take the slip to your bank and pay from your account. You can also post the slip to your bank who will make the payment for you.

Once you have done it this way you will never want to go back to cheques!
